Explanations

Barcode

Today there are many different types of barcodes. Generally you can distiguish between the so-called 1-dimensional and the two-dimensional (see matrix code) codes. The barcodes will be exposed in the "non-printing-area" of the printing plate to identify the plate for the software program. You need a barcode reader to read a barcode.

Blank plate

Blank plates are un-exposed plates for areas where you do not need an imprint. Typically you need blank plates on a 4-colour newspaper machine if you only want to print one colour.

CTP (Computer-to-plate)

In a CTP process the computer data will be send directly to the exposer ( see here for more details).

3-point align

If you have to fix an object in a certain position, it must touch three different points under a certain angle.  Therefore a printing plate must touch three contact points at the same time to get punched.

Printing plate processing plant

This term describes  a machine system that handles printing plates after the exposing and processing of the plate.

Pre-press

Pre-press is basically everything before the printing process.

Single page width printing plate

These are printing plates that have actually the same dimension as the printed  newspaper.

Fan-out-Compensation

The term "fan-out" describes the widening of the paper during the printing process. The compensation can be done by the CTP software.

Remote maintenance

This describes all service work via telephone or modem.

Flexo printing plates

Besides the offset technology in some countries (i.e. Italy, UK, US) you also use the flexo technology for printing newspaper.

Matrix code

A matrix code is a two-dimensional barcode, where you can store more data per sq inch than in a barcode.

Panoramic printing plate

The size of this printing plate covers exactly two pages of the newspaper.

Register marks

TP position a printing plate in a video controlled punch bender, you need register marks which are exposed on the printing plates.

Register correction

SPS-control (PLC-control)

These are free programmable computer systems to controll industrial machines.

Punch and Bender

The accurate positioning of printing plates into the printing press is very crucial. Therefore you need very exact holes in the printing plate.

Video-Punch and Bender

A punch and bending system where thhe positioning of the plate is supported by a camera.

Workflow-system

A computer system that controll the complete process of a plant.

Newspaper formats

On a worldwide level the following newspaper formats have been established:

  • Berlin format (315 mm x 470 mm)
  • broadsheet (375 mm x 600 mm)
  • Noprdic format 400 x 570 mm)
  • Rhine format (350x 510/530 mm)
  • tabloid (300 x 365 mm)
Remark: These format are not strict at all, i.e. they differ by more than 10% between publishers and countries.
Interleaving paper
To avoid spots and scratches on the highly sensitive coated printing plate, the plates are separted by interleaving papers.
